Wedding DJ’s: the good, the bad and the rest!
A Event or Wedding DJ can really make or break your party! I had the privilege of working with Steve while photographing the best event ever: an 80's themed birthday party at Plymouth Country Club! I was impressed with how he kept the dance floor moving and all the guests had so much fun! I was thrilled when he agreed to be a guest feature with an exclusive blog post for Jenee Cook Photography Brides!
"On your big day, every detail is important, some details are more memorable than others, but there is one detail that you will get feedback on almost immediately: the music.
A wedding party is only a party if the DJ you have selected makes it so! We have all heard horror stories like this, “I went to a fantastic wedding last week, the place was awesome, the bride was beautiful, the food was delicious but the music was horrible!”
There are certain things to consider when selecting your DJ. First and foremost, although your friends brother’s sister’s boyfriend’s Uncle is a DJ and will give you a good price, don’t do it! He will feel like he is doing you a favor, so lets face it, if he doesn’t do a great job, he’s kinda connected to the family so it's ok. It’s not OK, it’s your special day!
Second, we may think that with the availability of music mixing programs and a multitude of online resources for music, almost anyone can mix music. After all, you have already given your DJ your special songs, he has a music mixing program, some speakers and a subscription to Spotify so you're good to go right?
Wrong! Only a seasoned professional DJ will know which music to mix, when to mix it and how to switch it on the fly as the night progresses. And as for the equipment, a pro DJ will have at a minimum a selection of: lighting packages, remote music packages and various wireless and hard wired microphone’s that can be utilized. Personally, I carry a complete back up system including: 2 laptops, 4 or 5 microphones and back up mixer. After all, there’s no do over’s of this day!
As for the music, a good DJ will insist on meeting the Bride and Groom at least once or twice prior to the wedding. Apart from a few music entrance pieces, any special favorites and of course your all important first dance, you should only need to give the DJ a taste of the kind of music you like. As for the actual playlist itself a good DJ will be able to draw from their knowledge of music to build a custom list that will include cocktail hour, dinner and a party dance mix, all created personally for you.
Your DJ should also be a great master of ceremonies, if needed of course. They should be comfortable speaking to large crowds and commanding attention in a subtle way to ensure when you make your big entrance, everyone is on the edge of their seats!
Consider selecting entrance music for your wedding party. Perhaps your bridesmaid’s and groomsmen want to do a special dance as they enter or your parent’s want to let everyone know how they feel through a special song as they are introduced? I always recommend the bride and groom have their own entrance song, something that is up-beat and be on a party theme as it gets everyone into the spirit of the event. Then as everyone is surrounding the floor, you head right into your first dance and your special song….perfect!
There is a lot of work that goes into planning your wedding, the music and planning the party begins as soon as your DJ receives some of your music selections and meets you.
Trust reviews from close friends and from other pro’s like Photographer’s, Florist’s or Event Coordinators that may have worked with other DJ’s, they will give you their unbiased honest opinions and may know the right pro DJ for you!"
